Speaking of “Oxygen” (O₂), what is the first thing that comes to our mind? Is it the air that we are breathing? In fact, oxygen is a multipurpose gas due to its versatile properties. Oxygen is used in medical treatment, factories, and wastewater treatment.

Oxygen is applied to treat patients, especially those who have respiratory problems. Medical oxygen can kill bacteria that destroys our tissues and cells. As a result, new tissues are reproduced and wounds are healed faster.

In the industrial sector, oxygen is largely used in many functions. Although oxygen is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and inflammable; it helps ignition and enhances more effective combustion. Therefore, oxygen is used in combustion reaction of various industries such as glass, aluminum, copper, gold, lead, and cement. It is also used in the incineration process to decrease fuel consumption and reduce costs.

Furthermore, oxygen together with other gases are used in manufacturing processes. For instance, oxygen and acetylene are used in metal cutting, welding, polishing, cleaning, and melting. It is also used as a bleaching agent and provides heat for the steel industry. In the chemical and petroleum industries, oxygen is used as a feed component to react with hydrocarbon compounds to produce chemicals such as alcohols, aldehydes.

For wastewater treatment, “BIG” – Thailand’s innovative industrial gas solutions – has collaborated with Metropolitan Waterworks Authority to experiment on sewage treatment by feeding oxygen through the ozone generator and tap water. The result of this experiment was satisfactory.

As oxygen can be liquefied, it is more convenient to make use of oxygen largely. At -182.5 degrees Celsius, it is compressed and becomes liquid. Liquid oxygen takes less space than its gaseous form. Therefore, it is easier to transport liquid oxygen in bulk delivery, especially for industries and hospitals as they require a large volume of oxygen. With all the mentioned properties, we can say that oxygen is definitely a multipurpose gas.
