“BIG” is on the path to becoming a climate technology company with technologies to reduce carbon emissions and assist all industries towards the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to Net Zero. With CFO certification from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), the company advances a step further and is prepared to introduce even more innovations to help reduce carbon emissions, such as low-carbon industrial gases, digital platforms, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), and the use of hydrogen energy, etc.

Mr. Piyabut Charuphen, Managing Director, Bangkok Industrial Gas Company Limited (BIG), revealed that “BIG aims to be the leading climate technology company and industrial gas. First off, BIG is the first low-carbon industrial gas production in Thailand and the ASEAN region, utilizing an innovative air separation plant that uses coldness from the LNG Regasification process to reduce electricity consumption in industrial gas production. This ground-breaking method significantly lowers the indirect greenhouse gas emissions from electricity consumption (Scope 2), which is equivalent to a reduction in CO2 emissions of more than 100,000 tons annually.”

Recently, BIG became the first industrial gas producer in Thailand to receive a Carbon Footprint for Organization (CFO) certificate from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) or TGO based on its operations in 2021. Following the global objectives of BIG’s parent company, Air Products, BIG aims to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by the year 2050. Due to the relatively low-level carbon emissions produced directly from the company’s production process (Scope 1), BIG focuses on minimizing indirect greenhouse gas emissions from electricity consumption (Scope 2).

On the business front, BIG focuses on delivering innovation and technology to minimize greenhouse gas emissions to advance the industrial sector toward the country’s Net Zero target. The company is ready to support all business partners in managing each process of Carbon Footprint Enterprise (CFO) and Carbon Footprint Products (CFP) projects, including carbon credit trading from the project inception to TGO certification. This comprehensive business service involves the management and monitoring of carbon emission reductions in the production process through digital platforms. In this instance, BIG has successfully assisted its business partner, Maxion Wheels (Thailand) Co., Ltd., to become the country’s first CFP-certified aluminum alloy wheel manufacturer.

“Climate change is a serious issue that requires cooperation between all sectors of society and industry since it becomes worse every year. To address this global challenge, BIG is prepared to continue bringing innovation and technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, starting with being a leader in the production of low-carbon industrial gases; bringing innovations in the use of industrial gases to increase the sustainability and efficiency of energy usage; using digital platforms to manage greenhouse gas emissions; producing and using all forms of hydrogen energy, including the development of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), where BIG collaborated with the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University and other renowned organizations in establishing the Thailand CCUS Consortium. As a result of all these developments and initiatives, BIG is confident that it will be able to meet all sectors’ requirements in reducing fossil fuel energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in a meaningful way,” added Mr. Piyabut.

Mr. Sutheep Ratnabhas, President of Asia Business Unit at Maxion Wheels (Thailand) Co., Ltd., said, “Maxion Wheels manufactures aluminum alloy wheels for both the domestic and international automotive industry. The company has a clear policy to transition to a carbon-neutral organization, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from production by 70% by 2030. Achieving this goal would require cooperation from all partners across the supply chain. To that end, Maxion Wheels and BIG have long been excellent business partners, with BIG supplying industrial gases and CFP solutions to the company, which eventually led to the certification of all 16 of the company’s aluminum alloy wheel products, making us Thailand’s first CFP-certified aluminum alloy wheel manufacturer.”
